The Maine Federalist Society & the National Lawyer's Guild Presents: Clean Elections Debate
Monday, September 26th at 12:15 in the Moot Court Room
The National Lawyers Guild of Maine Law and the Maine Federalist Society will be hosting a debate on the Supreme Court decision Arizona Free Enterprise v. Bennett and its implications for the Maine Clean Elections Act. The debate will focus on:
1. The constitutionality of matching funds and the correctness of the Court's decision in the Arizona case;
2. The policy arguments for and against clean elections.
The speakers are:
For the Federalist Society, Bradley Smith, a Professor from Capital University School of Law and former chair of the Federal Elections Commission.
For the National Lawyers Guild of Maine Law, John Brautigam, former State Representative.
The event will be held Monday, September 26th at noon in the Moot Court room. Lunch will be provided.

The Red Mass is a mass celebrated annually at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception on Franklin Street in Portland for judges, attorneys, law school professors, students, and government officials. The Mass requests guidance for all who seek justice, and offers the opportunity to reflect on what Catholics believe is the God-given power and responsibility of all in the legal profession. However, PLEASE note, that this service is open to people of ALL faiths and all are encouraged to attend. The Red Mass is scheduled for Friday, September 30, 2011, at 11:00 am at the Cathedral, with a luncheon to follow immediately at The Portland Country Club (12:15-1:45). This year's speaker is Justice Robert Clifford, active-retired Justice of the Maine Supreme Judicial Court. Justice Clifford has lived a life of service, whether it be in the army, in Lewiston town government, the legislature, the court system, or his parish. Cost of attendance is normally $40, but for students the cost has been reduced to $20. Also, please note that if people do not want to attend the Mass at the church, they are more than welcome to just attend the luncheon/reception at the Portland Country Club. This is a good opportunity for law students to meet members of Maine's legal community and reflect on how they plan to use their degree to help promote justice. International Law Society Lunch Lecture

Sixty-six years after their introduction at the Nuremberg Trials, the notion of “Crimes Against Humanity” remains one of the most controversial and challenging concepts in international jurisprudence. Join the International Law Society for lunch on Thursday, September 22nd for a talk by Eric Reeves on ongoing Crimes Against Humanity in
Darfur, Sudan and the proper role of the international community in ending these crimes. Eric Reeves is Professor of English Language and Literature at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts. He has spent the past twelve years working full-time as a Sudan researcher and analyst, publishing extensively both in the US and internationally. He has testified several times before the Congress, has lectured in a range of academic settings, and has served as a consultant to a number of human rights and humanitarian organizations operating in Sudan.
Professor Reeves will lecture in the Moot Court Room at noon on Thursday, September 22nd. The International Law Society will provide lunch.

This year's speaker is Justice Robert Clifford, active-retired Justice of the Maine Supreme Judicial Court. Justice Clifford has lived a life of service, whether it be in the army, in Lewiston town government, the legislature, the court system, or his parish. Cost of attendance is normally $40, but for students the cost has been reduced to $20. Also, please note that if people do not want to attend the Mass at the church, they are more than welcome to just attend the luncheon/reception at the Portland Country Club. This is a good opportunity for law students to meet members of Maine's legal community and reflect on how they plan to use their degree to help promote justice. The Maine Association for Construction and Real Estate Law (MACREL) will be hosting its first meeting of the semester. If you are interested in real estate or construction law, please join us on Wednesday, September 7 in Room 118 and learn about the great opportunities available in this field. Lunch will be served.
