SBA Elections are Coming Up!
Sign Up to Run by 4:00pm on Wednesday, November 23.
If you are interested in running for SBA positions for the 2012 school year the sign up sheets have been posted!! Please have you name on the sign up by 4:00pm on November 23rd. 

Speeches are Wednesday November 30th in the 1L room (yes pizza will be served)

Health Law Association Care Package Drive
Just a reminder, the Health Law Association is still collecting items for the troops! Thank you to everyone who has donated already! Please speak with Kasey Ciolfi, Kristen Murray-James or Christie Herman about any questions regarding the care package drive or to donate money that will be used to buy items not donated.  The Health Law Association would like to be able to send three more care packages to the troops by the end of the semester!


Collecting Donations for the Preble Street Teen Center

The Maine Law Community is currently collecting winter clothing items for the Preble Street Teen Center through the end of the semester. This is a great opportunity to clean our your closets and really support our community's teenagers. New or gently-used jackets, sweatshirts, mittens, hats, and scarves will be greatly appreciated, as well as personal care products. Thank you for your support!

LGBT Caucus will be hosting Zach Heiden
Monday, November 21 at Noon in the Moot Court Room

As part of the commemoration of Transgender Remembrance Day on November 20, the LGBT Caucus will be hosting Zach Heiden, Legal Director of the Maine Civil Liberties Union to give a guest lecture on the topic of transgender rights in Maine as well as in New England and the nation as a whole. It will be on the Moot Court Room at noon on Monday, November 21st. Lunch will be served.


MAML's Last Meeting of the Semester

MAPIL Meeting

Please join MAPIL for our last meeting of the semester on Tuesday, November 22, at 12:15 p.m in Room 117. We will be holding elections for next year's officers. This is a great opportunity for 1L's to get involved with a group that provides numerous PAID fellowships for summer jobs as well as add leadership experience to your resume. We will also have a quick update on our Spring auction. Even if you have not yet been able to make a meeting, we would love to see you.

Lanes will cost $15/hr and there will be free shoe rentals. After the bowling there will be some phenomenal 1L skits back on campus!

A Few More Announcements

Student Animal Legal Defense Fund Meeting
Tuesday, November 15th in Room 506 at 12:05

The Maine Law chapter of the Student Animal Legal Defense Fund will be meeting in Room 506 (hint: it's on the fifth floor) at 12:05 PM this Tuesday, November 15th, to discuss group matters and scheduling. All interested students and faculty are both welcome and encouraged to attend.
During this general meeting, we will (finally) discuss scheduling of future events and vote on which speakers we would like to invite to the school. As we are trying to conserve funds for some awesome group activities to come, please bring a lunch!

PAD Canned Immunity Food Drive


PAD will be holding a food drive this week and next to benefit the local Food Bank, and we're introducing a little incentive for students to donate! Bring in a canned food to donate and gain immunity from the Socratic method in select classes!

Professors Zarr, Maine, and Cluchey have agreed to participate in this food drive with PAD.
If you are in Civ Pro I on Friday 11/18, Tax on 11/17, or Bus Ass on 11/17 and don't want to be called on, bring in a can to donate and gain immunity!

If you're not in these classes and want to donate anyways (and you should!) bring in a can and drop your cans in the boxes in the lobby.

Student Group Events at Maine Law During the Week of November 14th, 2011

International Law Society hosting author Lucy Morgan Edwards
Monday, November 14 at Noon in the Moot Court Room

The International Law Society is welcoming author Lucy Morgan Edwards for a lunchtime event at noon in the Moot Court Room this Monday, November 14.  Ms. Edwards is author of The Afghan Solution: The Inside Story of Abdul Haq, the CIA and How Western Hubris Lost Afghanistan, which chronicles the internal Afghan plot to overthrow the Taliban.  She is a former Political Adviser to the EU Ambassador in Kabul with responsibility for civil military affairs, narcotics and security sector reform. During her seven years in the region she worked for the UN in Kandahar at the height of the Taliban regime (supervising community and urban water supply projects), was an election monitor and a correspondent for the Economist and Daily Telegraph and the initial researcher for the International Crisis Group on Transitional Justice Issues, Country Expert to the EU Monitors of the 2005 Afghan Parliamentary Elections.  Ms. Edwards currently lives in Geneva, Switzerland.

The Maine Association for Construction and Real Estate Law will be hosting Len Bierbrier of Bierbrier Development, Inc., a company dedicated to the development of urban shopping centers. Len, who has taught courses in real estate development at Harvard University, and holds a law degree from McGill University, will be talking about how his company got its start, relevant legal challenges he faces in the ordinary course of business, such as zoning restrictions, and how the difficult financial times have affected the ability to obtain financing. Sean Mahoney, vice-president of Maine's Conservation Law Foundation (CLF), will be giving a presentation on Wednesday, November 9th, at 12:15 in the middle classroom. Mr. Mahoney will be discussing legal careers in environmental law, as well as highlighting some of CLF's local initiatives. Lunch will be provided.
