Student Animal Legal Defense Fund - Officer Position Meeting
Monday, October 1, at 12:15 PM in Room 118.
In this meeting, the Maine Law Chapter of the Student Animal Legal Defense Fund will be discussing officer positions and voting on our first group event. The Real World Transition: Law Student to Lawyer

Please join the SBA in welcoming Mr. Steven Abbott, Esq. as the guest speaker for the Real World Transition lunchtime discussion series. Abbott came to the University of Maine athletic department after running for governor of Maine in 2010. His candidacy was endorsed by Maine’s largest daily newspapers and the United States Chamber of Commerce. Formerly an attorney, Abbott served as Chief of Staff for Senator Susan Collins from 1997 through 2009. He was the top adviser to Senator Collins from her first year through her rise to prominence in the Senate, including her Chairmanship of the Homeland Security Committee. Abbott managed her Washington office and her six Maine offices.  He supervised a staff of more than fifty and worked extensively with Maine constituents including business, state and academic leaders. Abbott was Collins's campaign manager in both 2002 and 2008. He planned strategy for and directed successful re-election campaigns in competitive races where large victory margins far exceeded expectations.  Previously Abbott practiced law in Portland, Maine for Pierce Atwood, northern New England’s largest law firm. Abbott is a 1985 graduate of Harvard College with a degree in history. He was captain of the Harvard football team in 1984. He graduated from the University of Maine School of Law in 1991. He also studied Sport Management at the University of Massachusetts. Abbott was a standout student-athlete at Orono High School, where he played on six state championship teams.  Steve and his wife, Amy, have two children, Hannah and Henry. U.S. Senate Candidates' Forum on Issues Affecting Maine Women and GirlsThursday, Oct. 4th at 7:00pm at the Abromson Center (map)
Please join the Maine Women's Policy Center and our partners for a U.S. Senate Candidates’ Forum on issues affecting women and girls. The forum will be preceded by a public reception from 6:00pm to 7:00pm featuring the forum's sponsoring organizations. Women make up more than 53% of the registered voters in Maine, and women’s issues continue to dominate political debate at the state and federal level. The purpose of this forum is to give candidates for U.S. Senate an opportunity to address a wide range of issues that affect Maine women and girls, including economic security, freedom from violence, healthcare, and civil rights. Annual Maine Law Golfing Event

Saturday, Oct. 6th at 1:00pm at Riverside Municipal Golf Course
As some of you already know by way of Facebook, the Student Bar Association and Athletics at Maine Law will be sponsoring the annual golf event on Saturday, October 6, 2012. The event will begin at 1:00pm, and all are welcome and encouraged to attend. If you don’t want to play, you are still encouraged to join us for fun, food, and drinks at the course. Registration forms are currently available on the SBA bulletin board, and teams of four are invited to register at a cost of $20 per person. If you are unable to form a team, you may also sign up as an individual for $20 and we will place you on a team. 
Registration will be open during lunch time from Monday 9/24 through Friday 10/5.
The event is described as a “golf scramble,” which is described as follow:
“In a scramble, each player tees off on each hole. The best of the tee shots is selected and all players play their second shots from that spot. The best of the second shots is determined, and then all play their shots from that third spot, and so on until the ball is holed."
This particular setup for the game is friendly for those of us who may not be as skilled in the game of golf as others, so don’t be afraid to join in!
Food and drinks will be provided after the game. We hope to see you there!

ABA Law Student Division Fall Leadership Summit

LGBT Caucus Debate - Question Submission Deadline
Thursday, Oct. 18th at 7:00pm in Talbot Lecture Hall (map)
The University of Maine School of Law’s LGBT Law Caucus will be organizing a debate entitled: “Should Mainers Accept Same-Sex Marriage? A debate on the merits of Question One.” The event will be held on Thursday, Oct. 18 from 7:00 pm until 8:30 pm in the Talbot Lecture Hall located in the Luther Bonney Building on the USM Portland Campus. We have scheduled Mary Bonauto, a very successful LGBT rights lawyer for GLAD to argue for the merits of same-sex marriage while Carroll Conley from the Christian Civic League will be arguing against.
We are asking for questions from the law school to submit to the speakers during the event. Questions can be submitted from individual students, faculty, staff, or on behalf student organizations to one or both speakers. Please submit your questions by responding to either victoria.rodriguez@maine.edu oradam.m.anderson@maine.eduThe deadline to submit questions is Monday, Oct. 7 (this has been extended).

Immigrant Voices: Seeking Asylum in the U.S.
Friday, Sept. 28 at 7:00pm in Talbot Hall (map)
Recognizing the challenges facing asylum-seekers and the critical role of legal assistance to immigrant communities in Maine, Burundians will be sharing their immigrant journeys with you: events in Burundi, events in America, and the lives they lead today. The evening will also be a celebration of Burundian culture to include traditional Brundian drummers, dancers, and food! Facebook event here.

Constitution Day Lecture with Richard Fallon
Monday, Sept. 17th at 12:00pm in the Moot Court Room
Prof. Richard Fallon, one of the nation’s leading scholars and teachers in constitutional law, will give a lecture at the University of Maine School of Law on Sept. 17, for the school’s annual recognition of Constitution Day. Fallon is the Ralph S. Tyler, Jr. Professor of Constitutional Law at Harvard Law School, where he has taught since 1982. Fallon will explore one of our country’s most challenging balancing acts: How can we adapt the Constitution to meet the needs of the 21st century, while remaining true to the original document, most of which was written more than 200 years ago? If elected, the term is from September 19, 2012 to January 14, 2013. You have an opportunity to re-run for the position in the December elections.

U.S. Senate Candidate Debate
Thursday, Sept.13th from 7:15am – 10:30am at the Abromson Center (map)

Following on the success of E2Tech’s 2010 Gubernatorial debate, this year’s debate will feature candidates vying to fill Maine's U.S. Senate seat vacated by Senator Olympia Snowe. Former Governor Angus King (Independent), Secretary of State Charles Summers (Republican), and State Senator Cynthia Dill (Democrat) will all take part in our moderated, fast-paced and interactive debate. Professor Jeffrey Thaler of Maine Law will serve as moderator for the debate. Questions will focus on the candidates' views on environmental, energy and technology policies and their plans for stimulating economic development in Maine and the United States.

SBA in the Community: Habitat for Humanity
Saturday, Sept. 15 from 9:00am-3:00pm in Freeport

Join the SBA for its community service project with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Portland. Beginning at 9:00am, students will help build a house in Freeport. Interested students may sign up for an AM or PM shift, or both (AM shift: 9:00am-12:30pm; PM shift: 12:30pm-3:00pm). HFHGP was founded in 1985 as a private, non-profit 501c3 organization.  To date we have completed more than 50 houses, however we are committed to the development and uplifting of families and communities, not only to the construction of houses. He planned strategy for and directed successful re-election campaigns in competitive races where large victory margins far exceeded expectations.  Previously Abbott practiced law in Portland, Maine for Pierce Atwood, northern New England’s largest law firm. Abbott is a 1985 graduate of Harvard College with a degree in history. He was captain of the Harvard football team in 1984. He graduated from the University of Maine School of Law in 1991. He also studied Sport Management at the University of Massachusetts. Please join the Maine Women's Policy Center and our partners for a U.S. Senate Candidates’ Forum on issues affecting women and girls. The forum will be preceded by a public reception from 6:00pm to 7:00pm featuring the forum's sponsoring organizations. Women make up more than 53% of the registered voters in Maine, and women’s issues continue to dominate political debate at the state and federal level. The purpose of this forum is to give candidates for U.S. Senate an opportunity to address a wide range of issues that affect Maine women and girls, including economic security, freedom from violence, healthcare, and civil rights. Join the SBA for its annual 1L Faculty Ice Cream Social. This is an informal and fun way for incoming students to interact and socialize with faculty, administrators, and fellow class
mates. Students may participate in "Maine Law Bingo" and are eligible to win prizes. Plus, there will be lots of ice cream!

Sexy Night of Sexy Sex Trivia

On Friday, September 7th, Maine Law Students for Reproductive Justice is holding our annual sex trivia event.  We are excited to hold the event at one of Portland's premiere downtown bars, Novare Res, at 6:30pm. Tickets are $3.00 and will be sold at the SBA Student Organization Fair on Wednesday, September 5th.  We are inviting folks to create teams of four, with the top three teams going home with fantastic prizes.  Appetizers and goodies will be provided for all in attendance.
