Civil Rights Movie Nights

Sunday, March 27 at 4:00 PM
This Sunday, March 27, The National Lawyers Guild and the ACLU of Maine will present "The People vs. Larry Flint," starring Woody Harrelson as controversial porn king Larry Flynt, whose publications have faced numerous obscenity challenges in court. 4:00 pm in the Talbot Lecture Hall, Luther Bonney Hall (on the USM campus). Egypt in Transition: What does it mean for the Arab World and for US Policy?

Reception with food starting at 4:45 in the lobby and panel from 5:15-6:45 in the Moot Court Room. There will be some Middle Eastern dishes from the Star East Cafe. 


The World Affairs Council, together with the International Law Society, presents a panel of experts to discuss recent events in Egypt and their implications. The panel includes: 
  • Selma Botman, President of USM, who has studied political movements in Egypt and is a scholar of modern Middle Eastern politics;
  • Mahmud Faksh, Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Southern Maine, who has published extensively on Middle East and Islamic affairs; 
  • Charles Dunbar, retired US Ambassador with a long career in the Arab world, including embassy positions in Algeria, Morocco, Qatar and Yemen; and  
  • Moderator Kathleen Kinawy Sutherland, a longtime resident in Egypt and researcher on Egyptian society, including the role of women.
This program is free and open to the public. It will be a great chance to network with members of the international legal community in Maine. Click here for more information.


ILS Annual Study Abroad Panel

Come hear about study abroad opportunities at Maine Law and the process for applying from professors. Also, hear from students about their experiences studying abroad in Hong Kong and France as well as participating in the Franco-American Seminar in France and D.C. Food will be served.

Interested in being an ILS officer and getting more involved with international law? Sign up  or an ILS officer position, we need presidents, treasurers, everything! Anyone is welcome whether you've had a chance to participate in ILS yet or not. Sign up deadline ends this Friday April 1 and there will be an election meeting the following week for any contested positions. Come hear speakers Dr.  Catherine Bigley McGovern, Professor Peter McGovern and Professor Rita Heimas speak about various issues in Sports, Entertainment and IP law. Bio's are attached. Speaker about the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative
Friday, April 1st at 12:15 in the Middle Classroom
David Littell, former Commissioner of the Maine Department of Environmental Protection and current chairman on the the Public Utilities Commission, will be coming to speak on Friday, April 1st at 12:15 in the middle classroom.  Mr. Littell will be discussing the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative.  Pizza will be served.

Environmental Lase Society 5K Race
Saturday, April 9th at 2 pm
On Saturday, April 9th at 2 pm, the Environmental Law Society will be holding its annual 5K race.  The race starts across from the Hannaford parking lot on the Back Cove.  Registration costs $10 in advance for students and $12 on the day of the race.  Prizes will be awarded for the top finishers in the men's, women's, alumni and student categories, as well as for the top mixed-gender four-person team.

ELS will be holding registration during lunch in the first floor lobby the week before the race.  Come out and see if you are faster than your friends!
