The Back Story: Dean Peter Pitegoff
Monday, Oct. 15th at 12:10pm in the Middle Classroom
The Dean will speak to his experiences as a law student, the transition to becoming a lawyer, and his decision to pursue a career in academic, specifically becoming the sixth Dean of the University of Maine School of Law.

Movie Night: "A Legal Person"
Monday, Oct. 15th at 6:00pm in the Middle Classroom

The Maine Law Student Animal Legal Defense Fund will be putting on a showing of "A Legal Person"--a documentary about an animal law professor and animal rights lawyer who believes animals should be afforded the same rights under the law as humans. The movie will run from about 6 to 7:40 PM. Popcorn will be provided.

Join MLRSJ for our October meeting.  We will be discussing plans for our event next week, taking accounts, and planning our next event for November

LGBT Caucus Debate - Question Submission Deadline
Thursday, Oct. 18th at 7:00pm in Talbot Lecture Hall (map)
The University of Maine School of Law’s LGBT Law Caucus will be organizing a debate entitled: “Should Mainers Accept Same-Sex Marriage? A debate on the merits of Question One.” The event will be held on Thursday, Oct. 18 from 7:00 pm until 8:30 pm in the Talbot Lecture Hall located in the Luther Bonney Building on the USM Portland Campus. We have scheduled Mary Bonauto, a very successful LGBT rights lawyer for GLAD to argue for the merits of same-sex marriage while Carroll Conley from the Christian Civic League will be arguing against.
We are asking for questions from the law school to submit to the speakers during the event. Questions can be submitted from individual students, faculty, staff, or on behalf student organizations to one or both speakers. Please submit your questions by responding to either victoria.rodriguez@maine.edu oradam.m.anderson@maine.edu. The deadline to submit questions is Monday, Oct. 7 (this has been extended).

What's At Stake: Reproductive Rights & the 2012 Elections
Monday, Oct. 22nd at 12:10pm Moot Court Room
Please join Maine Law Students for Reproductive Justice and the Maine Health Law Association as we host a forum on what is at stake for reproductive rights this election season. Guest speakers Kate Brogan the Vice President for Public Affairs at the Family Planning Association of Maine and Megan Hannan the Public Affairs Director of Planned Parenthood Northern New England will discuss what has been happening in the field of reproductive rights in the context of the national elections as well as here in Maine. We will reserve time for questions, and lunch will be served. 


The VA Disability System: An Introduction for Law Students
Tuesday, Oct. 23rd at 12:15pm in the 1L Classroom
The Maine Law Student Veteran Organization is happy to welcome back alumnus Francis Jackson ('77) of Jackson & MacNichol to introduce students to an attorneys role in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Disability system.  With many service members returning from combat with service connected injuries and a growing backlog of claims, come find out how you can help in your legal career.  All are encouraged to attend this presentation and refreshments will be served.

Happy Halloween from MAPIL! Do you remember your elementary school days receiving carnations tagged with a message from that special someone? Well, MAPIL is bringing it back, but this time with bags of Halloween candy! Visit us in the lobby, and for $2 you can order a bag of (fancy) candies to be delivered to your friends and classmates on Halloween. Each bag is tagged with a (Twitter-style) Halloween message. Zodie’s 2nd Annual Charity Halloween Party
Friday, October 26th at the Portland Club
Shira Panelli, University of Maine School of Law Class of 2011, started a non-profit unincorporated organization called Cops with Cakes during her externship with the Neighborhood Prosecutor’s Office. Cops with Cakes gives birthday parties to children at homeless shelters in Portland. They also have a Portland Police Officer attend the party and give the birthday child presents and a cake as if the party supplies came from the police department. Please go to Cops with Cakes Facebook page to learn more about the organization.
Zodie’s 2ndAnnual Charity Halloween Party has picked Cops with Cakes as the beneficiary of their annual halloween party. Tickets are $25 each and all proceeds will be donated to Cops with Cakes. Tickets can be bought here. Also visit our Facebook event page!

Real World Transition: Law Student to Lawyer with Heather Sanborn
Thursday, Nov. 1st at 12:10pm in the Middle Classroom
Heather Sanborn, '07, is the attorney and co-owner of Rising Tide Brewery here in Portland.
Heather received a B.A. summa cum laude from Middlebury College as well as a M.S.Ed. with highest honors from the University of Southern Maine. While in law school, she had two case notes published in the Maine Law Review and eventually served as its Editor–in–Chief.
