Upcoming Student Group Events During the Week of October 24, 2011


ABA/SBA Family Fun Day at Timber Top Farm
Sunday, October 23, 2011, 1:00-4:00 p.m.
191 Lower Egypt Road, Bar Mills, Maine

There will be food (hot dogs, chips, cookies, drinks, fruit, etc.) as well as games and activities for the children, including bobbing for apples and pumpkin coloring. There will also be a Halloween costume parade, with prizes for the most creative and scariest costumes. This event is open to all Maine Law students (even if you don't have kids!!!) as well as law students from all 1st Circuit ABA law schools. M.A.P.I.L. HALLOWEEN CANDY SALE
All Week in the Lobby
It is time for our annual Halloween candy sale! We will be taking candy orders and delivering them in mailboxes in time for Halloween. You can deliver to other students as well as faculty and staff. The first bag costs $2 and each additional bag is $1. During lunch we will also be selling candy bars for your immediate enjoyment. Please look for MAPIL representatives in the lobby during lunch and throughout the day.


Environmental Law Society Speaker
Monday, October 24th, at 12:15 in the Moot Court Room

The Environmental Law Society will be hosting our first speaker of the year, Professor Jeff Thaler.  Mr. Thaler will present on Monday, October 24th, at 12:15 in the Moot Court Room.  Mr. Thaler is the University of Maine's Visiting Professor of Energy Policy, Law & Ethics, and also serves as Assistant University Counsel for environmental, energy, and sustainability projects and initiatives.  Prior to joining the University of Maine, Mr. Thaler was a senior partner of Bernstein Shur's Energy, Environmental and Litigation practice groups.  In his state and federal environmentaland energy practices, Mr. Thaler has been permitting counsel for on and off-shore wind project and hydro power, LNG, and wood-to-biofuel facilities, as well as for many other commercial development projects.  Mr. Thaler will be speaking on the present state of renewable energy in Maine.  Pizza will be provided.


International Law Society Speaker
Tuesday, October 25, at Noon in the Moot Court Room

The International Law Society at the University of Maine School of Law and Tilson Technology Management are pleased to welcome Patrick Malcor to speak at its Fall 2011 lunch lecture series on Tuesday, October 25th at noon. Mr. Malcor will lecture in the Moot Court Room at the School of Law.

Patrick Malcor is the CEO of Theodor Wille Intertrade (TWI), a leading provider of supply chain management services to the U.S. Government and other international organizations in some of the most challenging environments in the world.  Mr. Malcor will lecture on his experience in international business and law with both corporate and institutional actors, providing a broad survey of the practical aspects of international legal practice as a business leader.

Don’t miss this opportunity to hear about practical, real-world problems and solutions in international and business law from an experienced chief executive! Mr. Malcor will lecture in the Moot Court room at lunch on Tuesday, October 25th. The International Law Society will provide a delicious and nutritious lunch. We hope to see you there!


Ocean Governance Presentation by Professor John Duff
Wednesday, October 26th at 12:10 pm in the Moot Court Room
Professor John Duff, senior fellow at Maine Law, will present on Ocean Governance: The Intersection of Science, Technology, and Policy on Wednesday, October 26th at 12:10 pm in the Moot Court Room.  Professor Duff will discuss the manner in which a number of U.S. states have engaged in efforts to better manage their coastal & ocean resources.  He will also discuss economist Harold Demsetz's "guidance for investigating the emergence of property rights."

MAPIL and the Justice Action Group (www.mbf.org/justice) invite you to join us as Chief Justice Saufley, Justice Levy, and Commission Chair Ralph Lancaster officially launch the Katahdin Counsel Recognition Program. The goals of this historic program are to encourage Maine's lawyers to provide pro bono services to Maine's low-income and elderly residents to help address the growing unmet legal need and to annually recognize and honor those in the Maine bar that have been providing these essential services.  Please contact Taylor Kilgore (taylor.kilgore@maine.edu) for more information, or to find someone to carpool with.

Helping Those Who Have Served: A Lawyer's role in representing Veterans seeking disability benefits

The Maine Law VSO will give a presentation on the Veterans Benefits system followed by a discussion with Francis M. Jackson ('77). 

Francis M. "Jack" Jackson is a founding partner at Jackson & MacNichol in South Portland.  Before launching Jackson & MacNichol, Mr. Jackson practiced general civil and criminal litigation, including employee benefits and personal injury cases. After he had established his Social Security disability practice, Mr. Jackson expanded the firm’s practice areas to include representation of veterans seeking disability benefits. In addition to representing clients before the Veterans’ Administration, Mr. Jackson has pursued claims before the Court of Appeals for Veterans’ Claims and the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. He has been honored by awards from the Maine Bar Foundation for his pro bono work with the Volunteer Lawyers Project.

Mr. Jackson graduated summa cum laude from Bowdoin College in 1974 and earned his law degree from the University of Maine School of Law in 1977.  He was on the law review staff and a member of the national moot court competition team. While in law school, he was selected to participate in the Mental Health Law Project in Washington, D.C. 

There will be a Q&A session following the presentation. This event is in recognition of October as National Disability Employment Awareness Month and all students and faculty are encouraged to attend. Lunch will be provided.

Federalist Society and the Health Law Association
Monday, Oct. 31 at Noon in the Moot Court Room

The Federalist Society and the Health Law Association will be hosting Mr. Joel Allumbaugh of the Maine Heritage Policy Center and Mr. Garrett Martin of the Maine Center for Economic Policy for a debate about LD 1333, the new health care reform law passed in Augusta this past spring.  The debate will be held on Monday, Oct. 31 at noon in the Moot Court Room. Lunch and opinions will be served.


Health Law Association Care Package Drive
Just a reminder, the Health Law Association is still collecting items for the troops! Thank you to everyone who has donated already! Please speak with Kasey Ciolfi, Kristen Murray-James or Christie Herman about any questions regarding the care package drive or to donate money that will be used to buy items not donated.

Maine Law Veterans Night Out at the Portland Pirates
Saturday November 12th

In celebration of Veterans Day, the Portland Pirates organization is providing FREE tickets for all Veterans attending Maine Law, students and faculty.  Each veteran can claim their 2 tickets to the game on Saturday November 12th by emailing Neil Riley, neil.riley@maine.edu.
