Wednesday, October 12, 2011 12 PM to 1 PM in  Moot Courtroom,
“Kentucky v. King Pannel: Police Power, Civil Liberties, and the Fourth Amendment,”
presented by The Maine Trial Lawyers Association (MTLA).

US District Attorney Daniel Perry, DEA Agent Brian Tully, Attorney Zach Heiden from the Maine Civil Liberties Union, and criminal defense Attorney William Bly of the Law Offices of William T. Bly in Biddeford discuss the recent US Supreme Court decision in the case Kentucky v. King.

The panel will discuss the arguments presented to the Court, the rationale of the Court’s decision, and the effect of the decision on the balance between the state’s police power and citizens' Fourth Amendment rights.

This is an excellent opportunity for those 2Ls who are trying out for Moot court to pick the mind of our distinguished panelists and for those 1Ls who are curious about the real outcome of case that they will see argued in the spring by the Moot court team before the Supreme Judicial Court of Maine, and for anyone interested in Fourth Amendment jurisprudence.

Lunch shall be provided.

White House Champions of Change Event Celebrating Public Service Lawyers
Thursday, October 13 at 2:00 p.m. in Room 522A
The Maine Law School along with the Maine Association of Public Interest Law is hosting an online question and answer session with Attorney Eric Holder and law schools from across the country. Law students will have the opportunity to ask Eric Holder and the 16 other honorees questions about what lawyers can do to close the growing justice gap. One of the honorees is from right here in Maine, Nan Heald from Pine Tree Legal Services! This should be a historic conversation and a great event for the law school. If you have any questions about the event please email Marta Hurgin at marta.hurgin@maine.edu.

QPR Suicide Prevention Training
Friday, October 14th at Noon
The Maine Assistance Program for Lawyers and Judges is offering QPR (Question, Persuade and Refer) Gatekeeper suicide prevention training at the law school.

"Question, Persuade and Refer"
October 14th at 12:15-1:00 in Room 117

The training will cover suicide awareness, recognition of the signs that an individual might be at risk of suicide, and intervention techniques to persuade the individual to accept professional help. It is a well regarded suicide prevention system that is similar to CPR in that its purpose is to train laypeople in a technique intended to assist someone in crisis until professional help is obtained. Most acute suicidal impulses last for only a few days. QPR techniques are designed to interrupt that impulse and convince the suicidal individual to get the professional treatment he or she needs.

This event is coordinated through the SBA in collaboration with MAP and students looking to address and increase awareness of mental health and wellness among our student body.
