Upcoming Student Events at Maine Law the Week of March 12th

French-American Legal Seminar
Would you like to host a visiting French law student for a few days? The International Law Society is looking for volunteers to help host visiting students for the French-American Legal Seminar. Maine Law’s guests need housing from Tuesday, March 20th through Sunday, March 25th.  This will be a great opportunity to get to know someone from a foreign legal culture, and you will also be invited to attend our gala dinner on Thursday the 22nd.  Don’t miss this opportunity to meet a new friend and learn at the same time! The Back Story: Prof. Jeffrey Thaler
Monday, Mar 12th at 12:10pm in the Middle Classroom
Prof. Thaler is the University of Maine's first Visiting Professor of Energy Policy, Law, and Ethics, and he will be speaking on Monday.  Lunch will be served! Professor Thaler graduated magna cum laude from Williams College and from Yale Law School. He will be teaching Introduction to Renewable Energy beginning in March. His contributions to the legal community include:
  • Founder and 3rd President of  the American College of Environmental Lawyers
  • Founder and Co-Chair of the Environmental and Energy Technology Council of Maine
  • Created and directs nationally-unique program for Williams College students entitled Resettling Refugees in Maine
  • Represented family in 9/11 Fund claim and MCLU for 10 years of pro bono church-state litigation, and won the largest federal commercial jury trial verdict in Maine in an accounting negligence case.
LGBT Law Caucus
Monday, Mar 12th at 12:00pm in Room 117
The LGBT Law Caucus will be holding its second meeting of the semester in Room 117 on March 12 over the lunch hour. All LGBT and ally law students are welcome and encouraged to attend. We will discuss various initiatives and projects for the current and next semester.

Maine Law S.A.L.D.F. Group Discussion on the Use of Animals in Scientific Research

Do you love animals?  Do you love the law?  If so, please join the Maine Law Student Animal Legal Defense Fund (S.A.L.D.F.) for a group discussion on the use of animals in scientific research.  All are welcome and encouraged to attend.

ILS is hosting Greg Hansel, a partner at Preti Flaherty, who will be giving a talk entitled: Anatomy of an International Trial: Civil Litigation Across National Borders. Greg will speak about his experiences handling an international jury trial and provide some useful tips to students who are interested in practicing international law.

Federalist Society - John McGinnis, "Abolish Public Sector Labor Unions Now"
Monday, Mar 19th at 12:00pm in the Moot Court ROom
On Monday, March 19 at noon in the Moot Court Room, the Federalist Society will host Prof. John McGinnis of Northwestern University School of Law, who will deliver a talk entitled "Abolish Public Sector Labor Unions Now." In it, Prof. McGinnis will argue the reasons why public unions constitute bad policy. Questions will be taken, and lunch will be served. Prof. McGinnis teaches constitutional, international, and trade law at Northwestern. He holds a BA and a law degree from Harvard, and an MA from Oxford. He previously worked at the DOJ and clerked for the Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit. Note: There is a possibility that this lecture will evolve into a debate if a speaker is found to argue the other side.

MTLA - Jury Question: Should the jury be allowed to ask questions during trial?
Wednesday, Mar 21st at 12:00pm in the Moot Court Room
MTLA is hosting "Jury Question: Should the jury be allowed to ask questions during trial?" It will be a panel discussion regarding the implementation of this procedure in Maine. The panel will include Justice Mead (for a judicial point of view), Paula Silsby (for the prosecutor's point of view), Sarah Churchill (for the criminal defense point of view), and Professor Petruccelli (for the academic and civil litigator's point of view). Lunch will also be served.

Honorable Unity Dow of Botswana - Justice for Women Lecture
Tuesday, March 27, 2012, at 7:00 pm at the Abromson Center at 88 Bedford Street
Unity Dow is an international human rights advocate, a former judge, and a novelist. The Law School recently established the Justice for Women Lecture Series to bring a distinguished speaker to Maine annually to contribute to a global conversation about justice for women and girls. If you plan to attend the evening lecture on March 27th, please RSVP to Lexie Moras at 780-4344 or amoras@usm.maine.edu.
In addition to the March 27th evening lecture, Judge Dow has generously offered to spend time in the Law School, most likely on Monday, March 26th, to talk with law students and will participate in other events in the Portland area during a three-day visit. Stay tuned for more information about these other events.

"London 2012: Legal Ramifications of the 2012 Summer Olympics"

The Maine Society for Sports and Entertainment Law is having Paul Greene give a talk about "London 2012: Legal Ramifications of the 2012 Summer Olympics." ELS and HLA - Rep. Chellie Pingree
Tuesday, April 3rd at 12:15 pm in the Moot Court Room
The Environmental Law Society and the Health Law Association are hosting Rep. Chellie Pingree on April 3 in the Moot Court Room at lunch time (12:15-1:10). She will be speaking about food policy and the linkages between food choices, environmental health and human health. We hope to provide lunch from Local Sprouts.

LGBT Caucus - "Being Yourself In The Law"
Friday, Apr 6th at 12:10pm in Room 118

The LGBT Law Caucus will be hosting Prof. Wanderer to discuss over lunch with students on advice about being yourself and maintaining your identity in law school and in the legal world as an attorney, drawing from her experiences as an openly LGBT member of the bar and law professor. All are welcome to attend.
