Congresswoman Chellie Pingree - Rethinking Food Policy: Local Farms, Food & Jobs Act

Tuesday, April 3rd at 12:10 pm in the Moot Court Room
For decades, federal agricultural policy has forced out smaller farms to favor big industrial farms that produce just a few commodity crops and can't feed their commmunities.  In response, Congresswoman Pingree has introduced a bill to support local food systems.  Come, learn about food policy and enjoy a locally-sourced, organic lunch from Local Sprouts.  Sponsored by Environmental Law Society, Health Law Association, and Student Bar Association.

Maine Law SBA Presents: "The Real World: Transition from Law School to Lawyer" featuring Joe Lewis Esq.

Wednesday, April 4th at 12:10pm in the Middle Classroom
The SBA is hosting its final Real World lunchtime discussion. Mr. Lewis is a Maine Law alum, class of 2010. As a solo practitioner for Port City Legal LLC, Mr. Lewis will speak to "hanging up his own shingle." Lunch will be served.


Annual MAPIL Auction
On Thursday, April 5, 2012, the Maine Association of Public Interest will be hosting our annual fundraising auction at the law school. This auction is the primary source of fellowship money provided to students who spend their summerworking at a public interest job. There will be silent auction at 5 p.m. followed by a live auction at 6:30 p.m. There will be beer, wine and hors d'oeuvres. This auction will be a success with your support. So bring your wallet and a competitive spirit to outbid your fellow classmates on items ranging from artwork to sailing trips with professors. Being Yourself In The Law

The LGBT Law Caucus will be hosting Prof. Wanderer to discuss over lunch with students on advice about being yourself and maintaining your identity in law school and in the legal world as an attorney, drawing from her experiences as an openly LGBT member of the bar and law professor. All are welcome to attend.

Federalist Society Presents, "More Guns, Less Crime," with John R. Lott
Friday, April 6th at 12:05pm in the Moot Courtroom
Details of Event: This event will feature John R. Lott Jr. speaking about his book "More Guns Less Crime."  It is hoped that this event will morph into a debate between Lott and a speaker from a gun control group.  More information should be forthcoming as details are hammered down.

Maine Law SBA Presents: The "Back Story" Lunchtime Series with Professor Burke

Monday, April 9th at 12:10 in the Middle Classroom 

Professor Burke teaches in the Cumberland Legal Aid Clinic in both the General Practice Clinic and the Prisoner Assistance Clinic. Before joining the faculty full-time, Professor Burke was a lawyer in Lewiston from 1976 to 2005, with a practice covering nearly every area of law: Civil, Criminal and Constitutional cases in both State and Federal Courts and a general practice including real estate, family law, wills, probate, corporations (both for and not-for profit), and Federal ERISA and RICO cases. He has represented lawyers, therapists and real estate agents before professional licensing boards, and he advised artists and musicians on various artistic and intellectual property legal issues. He was a Complaint Justice and a Referee for the Eighth District Court, and a mediator and arbitrator for Superior, District and Probate Courts, as well as for private parties.

Nancy Foss, of Maine for Choice and the Abortion Access Fund of Cambridge, will be coming to Maine Law on April 11th at lunch time to speak about her work with the Abortion Access Fund.  She will be focusing on expanding the range of health care professionals that can provide abortion care in the state of Maine.  This will be a great discussion for any one interested in health care law and policy! Lunch will be provided

Vote or run for an officer position. Currently the candidates are: President, Laura Shortill; Executive Director, Joseph Mendez and Katie Hollstrom; Secretary, Tammie Snow; Treasurer, James Wade. Also on the agenda, planning a court visit.
 
SBA Sports Night Out!

"The Right to be Forgotten," presented by MALI

A guest lecturer will be speaking about the controversial subject of being able to delete yourself from the world. It is about becoming totally off the grid, including debts and former records of any kind. It could have major consequences for banks, credit ratings, and insurance companies, etc.
