The Real World Transition: Law Student to Lawyer
Monday, Oct 1 at 12:10pm in the Moot Court Room
Please join the SBA in welcoming Mr. Steven Abbott, Esq. as the guest speaker for the Real World Transition lunchtime discussion series. Abbott came to the University of Maine athletic department after running for governor of Maine in 2010. His candidacy was endorsed by Maine’s largest daily newspapers and the United States Chamber of Commerce. Formerly an attorney, Abbott served as Chief of Staff for Senator Susan Collins from 1997 through 2009. He was the top advisor to Senator Collins from her first year through her rise to prominence in the Senate, including her Chairmanship of the Homeland Security Committee. Abbott managed her Washington office and her six Maine offices.  He supervised a staff of more than fifty and worked extensively with Maine constituents including business, state and academic leaders. Abbott was Collins's campaign manager in both 2002 and 2008. He planned strategy for and directed successful re-election campaigns in competitive races where large victory margins far exceeded expectations.  Previously Abbott practiced law in Portland, Maine for Pierce Atwood, northern New England’s largest law firm. Abbott is a 1985 graduate of Harvard College with a degree in history. He was captain of the Harvard football team in 1984. He graduated from the University of Maine School of Law in 1991. He also studied Sport Management at the University of Massachusetts. Abbott was a standout student-athlete at Orono High School, where he played on six state championship teams.  Steve and his wife, Amy, have two children, Hannah and Henry. Annual Maine Law Golfing Event

Saturday, Oct. 6th at 1:00pm at Riverside Municipal Golf Course
As some of you already know by way of Facebook, the Student Bar Association and Athletics at Maine Law will be sponsoring the annual golf event on Saturday, October 6, 2012. The event will begin at 1pm, and all are welcome and encouraged to attend. If you don’t want to play, you are still encouraged to join us for fun, food, and drinks at the course. Registration forms are currently available on the SBA bulletin board, and teams of four are invited to register at a cost of $20 per person. If you are unable to form a team, you may also sign up as an individual for $20 and we will place you on a team.
Registration will be open during lunch time from Monday 9/24 through Friday 10/5.The event is described as a “golf scramble,” which is described as follow:
“In a scramble, each player tees off on each hole. The best of the tee shots is selected and all players play their second shots from that spot. The best of the second shots is determined, and then all play their shots from that third spot, and so on until the ball is holed."
This particular setup for the game is friendly for those of us who may not be as skilled in the game of golf as others, so don’t be afraid to join in!
Food and drinks will be provided after the game. We hope to see you there!
