SBA Meeting 
Monday, Sept. 10th at 12:00pm in Room 118SBA will be having it's first meeting of the semester, and the meetings are open to all students. For the first meeting, a representative from each student group must attend.

Maine Law Student Veteran Organization - First Meeting of the Semester

All students are encouraged to attend to the SVO's first meeting of the semester.  This is going to be an exciting semester with many different opportunities to get involved.

U.S. Senate Candidate Debate
Thursday, Sept.13th from 7:15am – 10:30am at the Abromson Center (map)

Following on the success of E2Tech’s 2010 Gubernatorial debate, this year’s debate will feature candidates vying to fill Maine's U.S. Senate seat vacated by Senator Olympia Snowe. Former Governor Angus King (Independent), Secretary of State Charles Summers (Republican), and State Senator Cynthia Dill (Democrat) will all take part in our moderated, fast-paced and interactive debate. Professor Jeffrey Thaler of Maine Law will serve as moderator for the debate. Questions will focus on the candidates' views on environmental, energy and technology policies and their plans for stimulating economic development in Maine and the United States.

SBA in the Community: Habitat for Humanity
Saturday, Sept. 15 from 9:00am-3:00pm in Freeport

Join the SBA for its community service project with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Portland. Beginning at 9:00am, students will help build a house in Freeport. Interested students may sign up for an AM or PM shift, or both (AM shift: 9:00am-12:30pm; PM shift: 12:30pm-3:00pm). To sign up, please email sba@maine.edu and  please indicate which shift you'd like. HFHGP was founded in 1985 as a private, non-profit 501c3 organization.  To date we have completed more than 50 houses, however we are committed to the development and uplifting of families and communities, not only to the construction of houses. Constitution Day Lecture with Richard Fallon
Monday, Sept. 17th at 12:00pm in the Moot Court Room
Prof. Richard Fallon, one of the nation’s leading scholars and teachers in constitutional law, will give a lecture at the University of Maine School of Law on Sept. 17, for the school’s annual recognition of Constitution Day. Fallon is the Ralph S. Tyler, Jr. Professor of Constitutional Law at Harvard Law School, where he has taught since 1982. Fallon will explore one of our country’s most challenging balancing acts: How can we adapt the Constitution to meet the needs of the 21st century, while remaining true to the original document, most of which was written more than 200 years ago? Wednesday, Sept. 19 at 12:10pm in the 1L Classroom
Details of Event: If you are interested in running for a 1L Representative position on the SBA, you must declare your candidacy between Wednesday, September 5 to Wednesday, September 12. After the 12th, the candidacy forms will be removed. In order to declare your candidacy, you must write down you name on the candidacy forms located on the SBA board near the Registrar's office. If elected, the term is from September 19, 2012 to January 14, 2013. You have an opportunity to re-run for the position in the December elections.

Immigrant Voices: Seeking Asylum in the U.S.

 Friday, Sept. 28 at 7:00pm in Talbot Hall (map)Recognizing the challenges facing asylum-seekers and the critical role of legal assistance to immigrant communities in Maine, Burundians will be sharing their immigrant journeys with you: events in Burundi, events in America, and the lives they lead today. The Real World Transition: Law Student to Lawyer
Monday, Oct 1 at 12:10pm in the Moot Court RomPlease join the SBA in welcoming Mr. Steven Abbott, Esq. as the guest speaker for the Real World Transition lunchtime discussion series. Abbott came to the University of Maine athletic department after running for governor of Maine in 2010. His candidacy was endorsed by Maine’s largest daily newspapers and the United States Chamber of Commerce. Formerly an attorney, Abbott served as Chief of Staff for Senator Susan Collins from 1997 through 2009. He was the top advisor to Senator Collins from her first year through her rise to prominence in the Senate, including her Chairmanship of the Homeland Security Committee. Abbott managed her Washington office and her six Maine offices.  He supervised a staff of more than fifty and worked extensively with Maine constituents including business, state and academic leaders. Abbott was Collins's campaign manager in both 2002 and 2008. He planned strategy for and directed successful re-election campaigns in competitive races where large victory margins far exceeded expectations.  Previously Abbott practiced law in Portland, Maine for Pierce Atwood, northern New England’s largest law firm. Abbott is a 1985 graduate of Harvard College with a degree in history. He was captain of the Harvard football team in 1984. He graduated from the University of Maine School of Law in 1991. He also studied Sport Management at the University of Massachusetts. U.S. Senate Candidates' Forum on Issues Affecting Maine Women and Girls

Please join the Maine Women's Policy Center and our partners for a U.S. Senate Candidates’ Forum on issues affecting women and girls. The forum will be preceded by a public reception from 6:00pm to 7:00pm featuring the forum's sponsoring organizations. Women make up more than 53% of the registered voters in Maine, and women’s issues continue to dominate political debate at the state and federal level. The purpose of this forum is to give candidates for U.S. Senate an opportunity to address a wide range of issues that affect Maine women and girls, including economic security, freedom from violence, healthcare, and civil rights.
