Constitution Day Lecture with Richard Fallon
Monday, Sept. 17th at 12:00pm in the Moot Court Room
Prof. Richard Fallon, one of the nation’s leading scholars and teachers in constitutional law, will give a lecture at the University of Maine School of Law on Sept. 17, for the school’s annual recognition of Constitution Day. Fallon is the Ralph S. Tyler, Jr. Professor of Constitutional Law at Harvard Law School, where he has taught since 1982. Fallon will explore one of our country’s most challenging balancing acts: How can we adapt the Constitution to meet the needs of the 21st century, while remaining true to the original document, most of which was written more than 200 years ago? The LGBT Caucus will be holding its first meeting of the 2012-2013 Academic Year on Tuesday the 18th at 12:10 in Room 118. The Caucus serves as the organization accruing all LGBT and allied law students in MaineLaw, and everyone is welcome to partake and contribute in plans with great conversation over lunch.

International Law Society

ILS will be having its first meeting of the academic year on Wednesday, September 19th, in the Berman lounge (that's the downstairs basement meeting room) at noon. All are encouraged to attend. We'll welcome new members, get organized for the year and start to plan and organize some events for this semester, of which we have many exciting possibilities.
 1L Speeches for SBA

Details of Event: If you are interested in running for a 1L Representative position on the SBA, you must declare your candidacy between Wednesday, September 5 to Wednesday, September 12. After the 12th, the candidacy forms will be removed. In order to declare your candidacy, you must write down you name on the candidacy forms located on the SBA board near the Registrar's office. If elected, the term is from September 19, 2012 to January 14, 2013. You have an opportunity to re-run for the position in the December elections.

Learn about a program that matches people from the community with Portland High School students to create supportive mentoring relationships, focusing on academic success, post secondary planning and socialization. This is a great opportunity to join the Portland Mentoring Alliance, established in 1992. If you have any questions, please contact Jen Hebert in room 105. Pizza will be provided. This event is hosted by Student Services.

 Immigrant Voices: Seeking Asylum in the U.S.

Recognizing the challenges facing asylum-seekers and the critical role of legal assistance to immigrant communities in Maine, Burundians will be sharing their immigrant journeys with you: events in Burundi, events in America, and the lives they lead today. The evening will also be a celebration of Burundian culture to include traditional Brundian drummers, dancers, and food! Facebook event here.

The Real World Transition: Law Student to Lawyer

Please join the SBA in welcoming Mr. Steven Abbott, Esq. as the guest speaker for the Real World Transition lunchtime discussion series. Abbott came to the University of Maine athletic department after running for governor of Maine in 2010. His candidacy was endorsed by Maine’s largest daily newspapers and the United States Chamber of Commerce. Formerly an attorney, Abbott served as Chief of Staff for Senator Susan Collins from 1997 through 2009. He was the top advisor to Senator Collins from her first year through her rise to prominence in the Senate, including her Chairmanship of the Homeland Security Committee. Abbott managed her Washington office and her six Maine offices.  He supervised a staff of more than fifty and worked extensively with Maine constituents including business, state and academic leaders. Abbott was Collins's campaign manager in both 2002 and 2008. He planned strategy for and directed successful re-election campaigns in competitive races where large victory margins far exceeded expectations.  Previously Abbott practiced law in Portland, Maine for Pierce Atwood, northern New England’s largest law firm. Abbott is a 1985 graduate of Harvard College with a degree in history. He was captain of the Harvard football team in 1984. He graduated from the University of Maine School of Law in 1991. He also studied Sport Management at the University of Massachusetts. Abbott was a standout student-athlete at Orono High School, where he played on six state championship teams.  Steve and his wife, Amy, have two children, Hannah and Henry. U.S. Senate Candidates' Forum on Issues Affecting Maine Women and Girls
Thursday, Oct. 4th at 7:00pm at the Abromson Center (map)
Please join the Maine Women's Policy Center and our partners for a U.S. Senate Candidates’ Forum on issues affecting women and girls. The forum will be preceded by a public reception from 6:00pm to 7:00pm featuring the forum's sponsoring organizations. Women make up more than 53% of the registered voters in Maine, and women’s issues continue to dominate political debate at the state and federal level. The purpose of this forum is to give candidates for U.S. Senate an opportunity to address a wide range of issues that affect Maine women and girls, including economic security, freedom from violence, healthcare, and civil rights.
