Justice for Women Lecture - Honorable Unity Dow of Botswana

Honorable Unity Dow of Botswana will deliver the inaugural Justice for Women Lecture on Tuesday, March 27, 2012, at 7:00 pm at the Abromson Community Education Center at 88 Bedford Street on the USM campus. Unity Dow is an international human rights advocate, a former judge, and a novelist. The Law School recently established the Justice for Women Lecture Series to bring a distinguished speaker to Maine annually to contribute to a global conversation about justice for women and girls.

Unity Dow served for a decade as the first female Judge of Botswana’s High Court. She also has been a Justice of the Interim Independent Constitutional Dispute Resolution Court of Kenya and is a member of the International Commission of Jurists. She returned recently to the practice of law, addressing challenges of HIV/AIDS, child protection, violence against women, and human rights in Botswana and other African nations. An acclaimed author and novelist, Judge Dow has published five books addressing gender issues, her nation’s poverty, and the struggle between Western and traditional values.  She has taught and lectured around the world, including an appointment as visiting professor at Columbia Law School.  She grew up in rural Botswana and studied law at the University of Botswana and Swaziland and at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland.

In addition to the March 27th evening lecture, Judge Dow has generously offered to spend time in the Law School, most likely on Monday, March 26th, to talk with law students and will participate in other events in the Portland area during a three-day visit.  Stay tuned for more information about these other events.

Meanwhile, if you plan to attend the evening lecture on March 27th, please RSVP to Lexie Moras at 207-780-4344 or amoras@usm.maine.edu.
